Miyajima II

I must have walked more than 10 km around the islands mountains and forests. Visited almost every temple and shrine.

First two cable cars to the first summit then a hike to the next. Once approaching the peak I started hearing chanting of the sutras and slow drumming. I knew I was in the right place.

View from the second cable car.

The first summit.

On the road to the second summit. Just in the middle of the summit is the lookout tower from the 13th photo.

Second summit.

:-D

More to come...

Miyajima I

I went to Miyajima. I went there 3 times in a row. Need I say more?

It's an island with lots of temples and shrines. There are wild deer everywhere. There's the huge torii (shinto gate) in the bay which is accessible after the tide goes down. There are cable cars to the mountain top. I loved every inch of that place. It's another place to add to my "If you ever go to Japan..." -list.

Higashi Honganji temple + the back alleys and streets

Higashi Honganji temple is just on the north side of the Kyoto station. I've walked past it several times but now decided to check it out while waiting for the Shinkansen. It was actually one the best bigger temple experiences so far. The building itself is one the biggest wooden structures in the world. Definitely worth checking out. There was this miniature telling how many lives were sacrificed during the building of this temple when people fetched the woods from the mountains. The photos 3-5 are from this miniature depicting the avalanches that killed people.

The rest of the photos are from the back alleys and streets in Kyoto. Small stuff you don't easily notice.

Tomorrow I'm leaving to Fukuoka. I try to tell about my time in Hiroshima and Miyajima soon. But I have at least 1000 photos from there so it will take some time to sort them out.

This is actually shot through the Shinkansen window.
